As it being a Kamal film, the movie opened big. What made it even bigger was the involvement of director Shankar. Indian grossed a total of 63 crores worldwide which was not crossed by any South Indian film untill Rajinikanth’s Chandramukhi released 9 years later. Kamal Hassan’s film recieved great success in its Tamil, Telugu, and even its Hindi version. Indian grossed a huge 16 crores in its Hindi version being the highest south Indian grosser in Hindi until Enthiran which came out 14 years later. Indian also managed to gross nearly 3 crores in Kerala which was not touched till Vijay’s Kushi released in 2000. Indian was a huge grosser at it’s time crossing Rajinikanth’s Baasha with a huge margin of 21 crores.
