Spyder - Box Office Collection

A. R. Murugadoss’s collaboration with Mahesh Babu released with high expectations from the audience. The high-budget action thriller made huge pre-release business, increasing the risk for buyers. Spyder released with a mixed response from the audience resulting in dropped occupancies during the first day of the movie’s release itself. The movie continued to drop over the weekend sealing the movie’s fate as a loss venture at the box office.

Spyder was able to gross nearly 52 crores in Andhra/TS with a distributor share of 31.63 crores. Mahesh Babu’s film was valued at approximatley 70 crores in Andhra/TS making it a huge loss venture for distributors in the two Telugu states. Tamil Nadu on the other hand was able to generate decent revenue grossing 22.45 crores by the end of its run. Despite the good returns, the movie did not do enough outside of Chennai, Chengalpet, and Coimbatore to be a profitable venture. Kerala shared a similar story as well. Karnataka on the other hand did decent business with the BBMP region being profitable for distributors. The rest of India market also fetched great returns grossing a huge 6.75 crores in North India. Spyder closed its business with an overall domestic cume of 95.77 crores.

Many overseas territories showed disappointing numbers by the weekend itself. The movie grossed a total of $2.79M in the overseas market. Much more of an audience count was expected from the Telugu and Tamil diaspora.

Spyder - First Weekend Collection

A. Nevertheless, Spyder grossed 92.18 crores in its five day weekend. Mahesh Babu’s film will still continue to rake in money but because of the weak performance over the weekend, the most the movie can do is minimize loss for buyers. The movie was able to recover near 46% of its money for distributors in India and 37% for distributors in the overseas market during the five day time period.

Spyder was able to gross a huge 14 crores in Tamil Nadu over the weekend thanks to A. R. Murugadoss’s name. In fact, the movie reported to have had better word of mouth in Tamil Nadu than Andhra/TS. Spyder also grossed over 2 crores in Kerala due to the same reasons. Another notable fact is Spyder’s five day gross in the North India market. It was able to gross 6.25 crores, a huge number for South Indian films. Spyder dominated in many circuits in North India ahead of many Hindi releases. Reliance Entertainment ensured great marketing for the film and released the movie in nearly 300 screens throughout North India. This shows the potential market of a well marketed South Indian film in the North market.

Andhra/TS and many overseas territories showed disappointing numbers over the weekend unlike Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and North India. Spyder plummeted by 87% in the United States after its premier day. Australia, another big market for Telugu films, had a similar trend. Exhibitors in New Zealand and many small overseas territories already have closed Spyder’s business fearing any more loss from screening the movie.
