Mersal - Box Office Collection

Mersal opened to generally positive feedback from audiences over the Diwali festival and was welcomed with a grand opening at the box office. The film became Vijay and Atlee’s highest grosser after just five days at the global box office. It managed to surpass the prestige 200 crore mark by its second weekend. Vijay and Atlee join the south Indian “200 crore club” along with Baahubali 2, Baahubali 1, Enthiran, Kabali, and Shankar & Vikram’s “I”. Mersal finished its run with 175.50 crores in India with approximatley 127.50 crores from Tamil Nadu itself. The film grossed nearly USD$11.87M outside of India, a remarkable feat for a south Indian film. Mersal is currently Kollywood’s 3rd highest grosser behind Enthiran and Kabali. When comparing with just the Tamil versions of Kollywood films, Mersal is the highest Kollywood grosser. This makes it an "All Time Blockbuster".

With a gross of 127.50 crores in Tamil Nadu, Mersal is the 2nd highest grosser in the state after Baahubali 2’s 135.30 crores. Vijay’s film has a cume total of 19.84 crores in Kerala becoming the 2nd highest grossing non-malayalam film in the state. In Karnataka, Mersal is a clean success with Bangalore doing on par with Chennai City. It is the 4th highest Tamil grosser and the 7th highest non-Kannada/Hindi grosser in the state. Distributors have been left with quite sustaining returns in all domestic areas. With a valued domestic theatrical rights of 84.50 crores, Mersal has returned a distributor share of approximatley 93.75 crores.

In the overseas markets, Mersal put up a massive figure of $11.87M (70.94 crores). It surpassed Vijay’s previous sucesss, Theri, to become the highest grossing Indian film in Sri Lanka. It finished its run in Singapore with a gross of SGD$1.65M only to be behind Enthiran and Kabali. Mersal has grossed about $2.06M in the Middle East and $2.08M in Europe. Mersal has an approximate distributor share of 33 crores in the overseas market, well ahead of its 25 crore overseas rights.

    Mersal - First Weekend Collection

    Mersal’s numbers continued to shock the trade grossing 156 crores in just five days. The movie holds the record for the biggest opening weekend in Tamil Nadu crossing Vedalam’s 46.70 crores (6 Days). It became the second biggest Tamil opener overseas grossing $8.19M including its overseas premiers on Tuesday. Mersal is already Vijay’s highest grosser in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, North India, Andhra/TS (Tamil), and the overseas market. Vijay and Atlee’s latest is already the 5th highest grossing Tamil film of all time and the 8th highest grossing South Indian film. Looking at its impressive opening and good word of mouth, Mersal is looking to chase over 200 crores worldwide and become the highest grossing film in Tamil Nadu.

    Mersal went on to have the highest Kollywood opener in Kerala as well grossing 12.49 crores. Vijay’s film had a similar fate in Karnataka having a non-Rajini (For Tami films) record. The movie is already Vijay’s first film to gross over 10 crores in Karnataka. Mersal already recovered nearly 5 crore distributor share in the state. It is looking to break-even before the end of this week (5.5 Cr MG Rights). Mersal grossed 3.32 crore in the rest of India market with 2.20 crores from the north and the rest coming from the Tamil version in Andhra/TS. Again, it is already Vijay’s highest grosser in these territories. Mersal grossed a total of 103.91 crores in India in its Diwali weekend.

    In the overseas markets, Mersal put up a massive figure of $8.03M (52.09 crores). It had the biggest Indian opening in Sri Lanka and Malaysia. In Europe, it had the 2nd biggest opening for an Indian film (Outside of the UK) after the Lunch Box. Mersal surpassed Kabali to have the biggest opening weekend in the Middle East market when excluding the UAE. Other numbers held non-Rajini records (South Indian Films).

    Mersal - First Day Collection

    Mersal had a grand opening at the box office thanks to ticket price hikes and pre-release hype. The movie grossed 50 crores from overseas premiers and its first day. It is officially the 4th biggest south Indian opener of all time.

    Mersal grossed approximatley 23.75 crores in Tamil Nadu, the highest ever surpassing the record of Kabali (19 Crores). It went on to have the highest Kollywood opener in Kerala as well grossing 4.65 crores. It fell short of Baahubali 2’s record of 5.47 crores. Vijay’s film had a similar fate in Karnataka having a non-Rajini (For Tami films). When including Telugu films, it is the 8th highest ever. Mersal grossed nearly 1 crore in the rest of India market with 60 lacs from the north and the rest coming mostly from the Tamil version in Andhra/TS. Mersal grossed a total of 33.40 crores in India on its first day, the 4th highest for a South Indian film of all time and the 2nd highest for an Indian film this year.

    In the overseas markets, Mersal put up a mind boggling figure of $2.55M (16.60 crores). It had the biggest Indian opening in Sri Lanka. In Europe, it had the biggest opening for a South Indian film. Other numbers held non-Rajini numbers (South Indian Films).
