Velaikkaran - Box Office Collection

Velaikkaran closed most of its business with a gross of 86 crores globally. The film closed as the highest grosser for the careers of both Sivakarthikeyan and M. Raja. After the decent opening, Velaikkaran managed to have a great performance at the box office with much of the Tamil audience having Velaikkaran being their number 1 choice until the Pongal releases. Sivakarthikeyan’s movie grossed 64.20 crores domestically and USD$3.41M (21.80 Crores) abroad. Though the film put up a respectable total, B and C centers unfortunately failed to share a similar response to A centers and resulted in losses for a decent number of distributors and exhibitors.

With the film aiming for a gross of 65 crores in Tamil Nadu to become a profitable venture, Velaikkaran’s total of 58 crores dissapointed quite a few in the trade. Velaikkaran ended with losses in all distribution circuits across Tamil Nadu. A point to note though is that the loss distributors faced is more attributed to the theatrical price of the film than the performance of the film. Velaikkaran put up great numbers post the first weekend and in fact performed better than Sivakarthikeyan’s previous release Remo. Remo’s first weekend was approximately 40% of its closing total while Velaikkaran’s first weekend was approximately 38% of its total. Despite a slightly better performance, Velaikkaran was a loss for Tamil Nadu buyers while Remo was a financial success. Velaikkaran finished as the 14th highest grosser in Tamil Nadu only to be behind crowd pullers of the older Kollywood generation and Baahubali 2.

Velaikkaran had an average response in other Indian territories. It had a disasterous run in Kerala finishing with over a 1.50 crore loss in the state. On the other hand, Velaikkaran put up great numbers in Karnataka finishing near 4 crores in the state with the Bangalore circuit showing great profits. North India and other Indian territories showed fairly decent returns too.

Velaikkaran became the highest grosser for Sivakarthikeyan in the overseas market with territories putting up record numbers for the actor. But just like Tamil Nadu, the respectable total did not diminish losses at all. The movie fell victim to fancy prices abroad as well despite a total gross of nearly 22 crores - 25% higher than Remo.

Overall, Velaikkaran can be declared an Average to Above Average venture at the box office thanks to its huge prices. It is the 6th highest Tamil grosser of 2017 and the 27th highest Tamil grosser of all time (Including the Baahubali series).

Velaikkaran - First Weekend Collection

Velaikkaran grossed 36.15 crores globally after three days at the box office. The film debuted #2 in India after Tiger Zinda Hai. Velaikkaran grossed 24.45 crores domestically and USD$1.83M (11.70 Crores) abroad. The film received a generally mixed to positive response from audiences opening well in A centers. B and C centers unfortunately failed to share a similar response opening to numbers below Sivakarthikeyan’s last release “Remo”. Despite the negatives, Velaikkaran set a new record for Sivakarthikeyan edging past Remo’s three days global cume of 34 cores.

Post Remo, Sivakarthikeyan created huge buzz in the trade and managed to fetch fancy prices for Velaikkaran. Due to such prices, the film had to aim for nearly 65 crores in Tamil Nadu alone to become a profitable venture for many of the parties involved. With the movie collecting a mere 22.25 crs in three days, Velaikkaran has disappointed many. On the bright side however, Velaikkaran has shown an overall positive trend with its 2nd day numbers in Tamil Nadu being nearly 90% of its 1st day. Velaikkaran’s 3rd day in Tamil Nadu distribution circuits have all shown figures higher than its 1st Day. With this trend, the trade hopes for Sivakarthikeyan and M. Raja’s duo to hold strong in the upcoming days.

Outside of Tamil Nadu, Velaikkaran had an average opening with only certain overseas territories and Karnataka returning decent numbers. Malaysia, North America, Sri Lanka, and Singapore have opened to decent numbers while Oceania and the Middle East returned “Ok-ish” numbers performing a bit below “Remo”. Europe was very poor for Velaikkaran with the poor publicity and Christmas holidays to blame for. Velaikkaran’s venture in Kerala has already been declared disastrous as it looks like it is going no where near the expected 2.50 crs distributor share.

All eyes are on Velaikkaran’s upcoming weeks at the box office as its performance post its opening will determine the movie’s fate.
