2.0 - Box Office Collection

2.0 emerged as the highest grossing Kollywood film earning over 620 crores worldwide. It also became India's 6th highest grosser. The movie amassed a massive 495 crores from India and USD$17.89M (125.64cr) abroad. These accomplishments, though great, mask the film's ugly truth.

2.0 was set to open huge at the box office. Made at a budget over 575 crores, 2.0 was the costliest Indian film ever to be made. Despite being such a big film, the film's opening numbers disappointed the trade. It grossed a disastrous 13.15 crores in Tamil Nadu on its 1st day. This was well less than half of the record holder (Sarkar - 31.82cr) in the state. Trade experts cited its lack of hiked ticket prices across the state as a major player behind the below-par opening. Poor marketing and pre-release hype would have been the underlying cause of the low ticket prices. Fortunately, its reception was better off in North India, Andhra/TS, and Karnataka.

After the opening week, 2.0 showed improvement in the domestic market. It had a superb hold in Tamil Nadu even in its B & C stations. By the end of its run, 2.0 grossed approximately 112.50 crores in Tamil Nadu. Shankar's film was declared a "Super Hit" in its Hindi markets and fetched decent returns in Andhra/TS and Karnataka as well.

2.0 became the highest grossing Kollywood film abroad earning huge numbers in North America, Oceania, and the Middle East. It performed decently in other areas too. Here is its overseas breakup:

Overseas Breakup

  • North America - USD$5.81M
  • Middle East - USD$4.25M
  • Malaysia/Sri Lanka/Singapore - USD$3.50M
  • Europe - USD$2.02M
  • Australia/New Zealand - USD$1.21M
  • Pakistan - USD$380K
  • Nepal - USD$350K
  • Africa - USD$275K
  • Rest of the World - USD$100K
  • Closing Total - USD$17.89M
Despite decent numbers, it has to be noted that 2.0 is India's costliest film. Much more was expected from the extravaganza. It failed to create Kollywood records in major areas like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and many traditional Tamil overseas markets. The records that 2.0 did break failed to create the impact it should have for a film of its massive scale. In the end, 2.0 closed its business with over a 100 crore loss for Lyca Productions. Ironically, the film is also Kollywood's highest earner and will most likely remain to be so for many years to come.

The following shows what distribution method each territory is distributed through. The Profit/Loss column in the distributor analysis table is calculated based off of which distribution method a territory is distributed through. This makes it so that a distributor's profit is not always calculated by subtracting "Rights" from "Share". Indian Movie Stats focuses on four different distribution methods: Non Refundable Advance, Minimum Guarantee, Advance Basis, and Own Release.
