Theri - Box Office Collection

Constraints

  • Did not have a proper release in the Chengalpet distribution circuit, the biggest circuit in Tamil Nadu.
  • During a screening in Canada, the screen it played in faced an attack. This affected Theri’s performance in the long run.
Notes
  • On its first day, it set records in all distribution circuits in Tamil Nadu. (Except Chengalpet)
  • 3rd highest Tamil grosser behind Enthiran and “I”
  • In Chennai, Theri set the record for the highest grossing film. Outside of Chennai, all other territories were second to Enthiran (Disregarding the Chengalpet circuit)
  • The only film after Enthiran to gross over 10 crores in 4 different circuits in Tamil Nadu.
  • 2nd highest grossing South Indian film in Kerala after Shankar’s “I”.
  • First Non-Rajini/Shankar South Indian film to gross over 150 crores worldwide.
  • Highest grossing Vijay film.

    Theri - First Weekend Collection

Theri grosses a huge 87 crores after it's first weekend worldwide. The movie became a record opener for actor Vijay and in some areas, a record for Tamil films. In Tamil Nadu, the film grossed a huge 37.5 crores after 4 days which is outstanding without a Chengalpet release that could have added 8 crores to it's home state total. The film has created a record in Chennai city grossing nearly 4 crores in it's weekend. Other big areas like Coimbatore set records as well. In Kerala, the movie held the second highest opening weekend for a Tamil film after Shankar's "I". The film grossed nearly 10 crores in Kerala during the weekend which is near actor Vijay's career record of 10.5 crores in the state. Karnataka set records for the actor as well with it's gross above 5 crores. Andhra/TG had a decent opening for a Vijay film but failed to create any records for the actor. Overseas the film was grand grossing 30 crores in it's opening weekend, a record for the actor once again and one of the best openings in Kollywood. Malaysia witnessed an average opening surprisingly mostly due to the fact it wasn't a festive release. It still was expected to gross more than 5 crores in it's weekend. Other territories on the other hand were marvelous with the film nearing the $1 million mark in North America. In the UK, Theri set the record for the highest opening weekend for a Tamil film crossing Rajini's Enthiran. Theri did great business in Australia as well outperforming Sharukh Khan's film "Fan". A big deal this is to outperform a big budgeted Hindi film. Singapore and Sri Lanka were all similar as well grossing huge numbers in a short number of time. The film is already declared a huge success in France and other parts of Europe as well. Most territories will be career highs for Vijay despite the mixed reviews the film has received. Overseas looks like a guarantee success and so does Kerala, Karnataka, and the rest of India. Tamil Nadu looks a bit risky but still has the chance to become a profitable venture. Whether or not the mixed reception will affect the film in these territories will be seen next week.

    Theri - First Day Collection

Theri opened to huge numbers now holding the record opening day for a Tamil version of a film in India. Vijay's latest film took a huge start in it's home state getting a huge 13.5 crores on it's first day. This huge number was also achieved with a limited Chengalpet release against it;s planned 60 screen release it was supposed to have but didn't due to some issues. If the movie had a normal release, Theri would have grossed near 17 crores in Tamil Nadu crossing Vedalam's 15.5 crore opening. In Kerala, the film got the second biggest ever opening for a Tamil film grossing over 3 crores on it's first day, falling behind Shankar's "I" by 3 lakhs. Karnataka the film was similar to Kerala being the third best Tamil opener after "I" and Enthiran. AP/TG and the rest of India were also records openers for Vijay. Overseas the movie put up huge numbers. In the USA, Theri grossed a huge 2 crores after it's premier and thursday already crossing Vedalam's full run collection. Theri is expected to cross Vedalam's full run collection after it's first weekend in key territories like Australia, New Zealand, Europe, UK, and Singapore. Theri will soon cross Kaththi's North America collection as well. The movie is estimated to have grossed a total of 10 crores on it's first day outside of India. With it's India collection standing at 21.5 crores, Theri grossed a total of 31.5 crores worldwide on it's opening day. With a normal Chengalpet release, the number would have been near 34.5 crores. Theri is declared the 4th biggest Kollywood and Tamil version opener worldwide and the best Tamil version opener in India. A huge first day it is, we will have to see if the film can sustain during it's weekend. (Telugu version was included in it's first day despite it releasing a day later than it's Tamil version.)
