Anniyan - Box Office Collection

Anniyan established a great deal of pre-release hype. With a productoin cost of 10 crores, it was a common doubt if Anniyan would be able to reover its costs or not. Shankar’s film released to a great response all over silencing negative trade talk. Anniyan further elevated Vikram’s position in the south Indian market making him pan-south Indian famous. After Anniyan’s release, Vikram was said to have the second biggest market for a south Indian actor after Rajinikanth.

Anniyan took a historic opening worldwide setting multiple records. Shankar’s film grossed nearly 50 lacs in six screens across Chennai City during the opening weekend. It grossed nearly 27 lacs from Satyam Cinemas alone in the first 7 days. Anniyan was reported to have grossed nearly 16 crores in its first week in Tamil Nadu. In Chennai City, the film managed to beat the collection of of Chandramukhi closing at a huge 5 crores. The 1266 seater Sathyam theater reported to have a 50-day total net of 1.13 crores. It had a long and effective run in Chennai city thanks to the big release in Sathyam where the ticket prices are much higher. Outside of Chennai City, Anniyan dropped heavily after the 2nd week. Due to the drop, it collected less than Ghilli in most areas around Tamil Nadu. The psychological thriller closed as the highest grossing dubbed film in Andhra Pradesh (Crossing Chandramukhi there as well). Kerala’s total cume of 6.5 crores and the Hindi version’s cume of 4 crores were also new records for Tamil films.

Anniyan ran well overseas grossing above 12 crores. It earned $300,000 in the USA. Singapore finished at S$800,000. Malaysia closed at $930,000. In all overseas territories, Anniyan placed 2nd to Chandramukhi.

Box Office Notes

  • 2nd highest grossing south Indian film at the time.
  • Highest grossing dubbed film in Andhra Pradesh until Sivaji’s release.
  • Ran for 175 days in Tamil Nadu.
  • Ran for 150 days in Kerala.
